Treats for Rabbits

Treats are a great way to bond with your rabbit, but they should be given sparingly. Here's how to treat your bunny right.

📌 Rule: Treats should make up less than 5% of your rabbit's diet.

Healthy Treat Options

Fruits (1-2 tbsp per 5 lbs, 2-3x per week)

Apple (no seeds)
Banana
Blueberries
Strawberries
Raspberries
Watermelon
Pear
Peach

Herbs (Occasional Treats)

Basil
Mint
Dill
Thyme
Rose petals

Treats to Avoid

  • Chocolate — Toxic to rabbits
  • Yogurt drops — Not natural, can cause digestive issues
  • Seeds and nuts — Too high in fat
  • Human crackers/cereals — Too much sugar and processed ingredients
  • Bread, pasta, rice — Cannot digest properly
  • Onions, garlic — Toxic
  • Ice cream — Toxic
  • Chips, pretzels — Processed, unhealthy

Commercial Treats to Avoid

  • Yogurt drops
  • "Treat" mixes with seeds and dried fruit
  • Marshmallow treats
  • Seed bars
  • Anything with added sugar or artificial ingredients

Feeding Treats Safely

  • Introduce new treats slowly (a tiny piece at first)
  • Don't give more than the recommended amount
  • Remove seeds and pits from fruits
  • Wash all produce thoroughly
  • Choose organic when possible (avoid pesticides)
  • Use treats for bonding and training, not as a main food source

Signs You're Giving Too Many Treats

  • Soft or sticky droppings
  • Decreased appetite for hay
  • Weight gain
  • Messy bottom

If this happens, cut back on treats and increase hay.
